Top Global CEO's Briefed on Anti-Aging Revolution By Fintan Dunne - September 12th, 2007
The Forbes Global CEO Conference in Singapore of the world's top business leaders has today been told that we now stand on the brink of a golden age of greatly extended human longevity. The anti-aging pioneer, Dr. Robert Goldman gave over 400 tycoons a key conference briefing on the medical biotechnology behind the revolution in aging, and its societal implications.
Dr. Goldman, who is Chairman of the Board of the world's leading medical society on aging, the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), told conference attendees that his organization is at the cutting edge of a major shift in medical science: from the treatment of disease to a focus on wellness.
"We now understand the human body better than ever," said Dr Goldman in his conference briefing. "How and why it ages and sickens, and how to prevent disease, and fix or replace body parts that degenerate. We have emerging biomedical technologies such as stem cell therapy, nanotechnology drug delivery and even the development of bioidentical replacement organs. With early detection and appropriate intervention, many diseases can be prevented, cured, or have their downward course reversed."
"The cumulative effects of these advances mean that life spans of up to, and over 120 years are possible for people alive today," he said.
Booming Anti-aging Medicine
Just last week, at an official ceremony in Bali, Indonesia at Udayana University School of Medicine, Dr Goldman was appointed Professor of a two-year- long, government sanctioned and approved Masters Degree program in anti-aging medicine, under the auspices of the university's department of biomedical sciences. It is the world's first such program of study and qualification.
Nearby Nusa Dua, Bali was also the scene last weekend of the A4M's Sixth Asia Pacific Conference on Anti-aging Medicine, as hundreds of physicians from across the region participated in lectures and workshops on Anti-aging Medicine & Regenerative Biomedical Technologies.
It's been a sparkling twelve month period for the Chicago-based anti-aging medical society headed by by Dr. Goldman and colleague Dr. Ronald Klatz, President of the A4M. A year which began with a strategic US$60 million investment in Medical Conferences International Inc.(MCII), which was founded by the two pioneering anti-aging physicians. The investment by London-based Tarsus Group PLC saw them take an 80% stake in MCII.
In July, 2007, Tarsus along with Drs. Goldman and Klatz formed a new company, CapRegen PLC, to make investments in the global anti-aging and regenerative medicine marketplace. The CapRegen IPO raised US$7.4 million, before expenses, to a total share capital of US$11 million, as the IPO issue shares rose up by 27% on the first day of trading.
The A4M now oversees ongoing training of over 35,000 physicians and surgeons on-site, and the education of 500,000 health professionals globally through international outreach programs
Destination China
Tarsus/MCII have close to 30 international cosponsored anti-aging expositions set for 2008. In one of the largest medical shows in the world, with a host of renowned speakers from within China and across the globe, from the 29th to 31st of October this year, Shanghai will welcome 20,000 physicians to the World Anti-Aging Congress and China Pharm Exposition, with 3,000 booths on 400,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space.
Immediately after the Shanghai World Congress, most of the speakers and exhibitors will move to Dong Guan near Hong Kong, where more than 2,000 physicians, scientists and hospital principals will come together to learn, network and source anti-aging products at the China Health Industry Forum.
Both events have the official backing of the Chinese government and the significant co-ventured support of the China Pharmaceutical Association, China FDA International Medicine Exchange Center, Chinese Medical Association, and China Medical Association Health Promotion Committee, as well as many national level Chinese medical organizations.
$1 Million LEx Prize
Even as the A4M/MCII takes its message to the world, Drs. Goldman and Klatz along with other pioneering anti-aging physicians have announced a global race, now spanning 100 countries, to claim a US$1Million life extension cash prize for the first scientist or team who can reliably show significant reversal or halting of aging in humans.
The LEx Prize will be awarded for a therapeutic program which reduces objective, measurable biomarkers of aging, including mitrochondrial energy production, cortisol levels, DNA repair, cardiac output, memory and cognitive function.
Lifespan 120 Plus
The cumulative effect on human lifespan which the anti-aging revolution offers can be seen in a free, online Lifespan Test, developed in association with Dr. Klatz, Dr. Goldman and a team of scientists.
The interactive test encourages a life extension lifestyle and graphically shows the dramatic increase in longevity which will be delivered by appropriate nutrition and exercise, supported by current and expected biomedical advances. The test shows that a lifespan of 120 years and more can optimally be achieved.
In 2005, the Business Communications Company Inc. (a US research company) estimated that turnover in the US Anti-Aging medical marketplace would reach some $49 billion in 2005 and would grow to some $72 billion by 2009, a compound growth rate of 10% annually.
Anti-Aging Medicine is an extension of preventive health care and is based on the early detection, prevention, and reversal of aging-related diseases, as well as encompassing the wide array of plastic surgery, cosmetic and aesthetic procedures.
The science is multidisciplinary, covering not only established fields of biochemistry, biology, and physiology, but extending into mind/body medicine, sports medicine, molecular genetics, stem cells, nanotechnology, gene therapy and other emerging medical technologies and diagnostic advances.
